WHEN THE ANIMALS DIVIDED INTO PAIRS |
1. Unhtsah ninya niłteh ja'idatl' łu. |
In the beginning they say the animals divided up in pairs. |
2. Nił'eł hnadulghesh [ch'u] |
They would talk together [and] |
3. niłqilket. |
they would take one another as partners. |
4. "Gun shida tulał," qetnih. |
They said, "You will be my friend." |
5. Ch'u "Yadi nudnelyahi nak'un'a tulał," qetnih. |
And they said, "The plants will be our food". |
6. Ch'u eseni ch'u ch'bala kusht'a hqiłkeł. |
And Cottonwood and Spruce had no partners. |
7. Ch'bala ghen łu ni, |
Spruce said, |
8. "Eseni dench'ułkegh. |
"Cottonwood and I are both tall. |
9. niłhuch'ulkitni," yełni. |
We should be partners." |
10. Eseni ghen łu ni, |
But Cottonwood said, |
11. "Ah shi ki dach' q'u tgheht'ał," ni. |
"Well, I will just remain by myself." |
12. Ch'u ninya łik'a k'usht's qełkeł. |
And none of the animals took the dog. |
13. Ch'u ch'bala ghen hdi łuq'u bannaztlaq' hez enlan. |
And Spruce is all covered with sores and filled with pus. |
14. Yi ghuda k'usht'a qyiłkeł. |
That's why no one took it. |
15. Ch'u ch'bala ghen łu ni, |
And spruce said, |
16. "Yadi niłtu ch'tulał |
"This is why we will be |
17. qutsidghe'i'ina kisht'a shughuhdułt'ał." |
useful to the Campfire People." |
18. "Stsen gin k'u hbek'ineshi |
"They will use my flesh [the flesh they take] |
19. k'u qyeghudułt'ał," ni łu. |
if they get food poisoning," [it (spruce) said, it is said]. |
20. Ch'u łik'a ghen hdi ni łu, |
And dog said, |
21. "Shi ki qutsidghe'ich' hdatghelcheł. |
"I too will go to the Campfire People. |
22. Qenyi ninya ndahduh danlts'i yeh hbedetgheshnih," ni łu. |
I will tell them about where you are staying," (it is said, it said). |
23. Yet łu ninya k'ahdulyak ch'u qengheduk gin k'eli: |
And then the animals sang and danced this song: |
24. Łik'a tuyuł. |
The dog will challenge anything. |
25. K'a tuyuł. |
He will challenge anything. |
26. Dena'ina łu shesh k'eli qyedgheł'an. |
The Dena'ina had that as a hunting song for good luck. |
